1. The Field
A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards long by 40 yards wide, with end zones 20 yards deep.
2. Starting Play
Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of opposite end zone lines. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.
3. Scoring
Each time the offense catches a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. The teams switch direction after every goal, and the next point begins with a new pull by the team that just scored.
4. Movement of the Disc
The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc (“thrower”) has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower (“marker”) counts out the stall count.
5. Change of Possession
When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
6. Substitutions
Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
7. Non-Contact
Players must attempt to avoid physical contact during play. Picks and screens are also prohibited.
8. Fouls
When a player initiates contact that affects the play, a foul occurs. When a foul causes a player to lose possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player that the foul was called against disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
9. Self-Officiating
Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
10. Spirit of the Game
The foundation of the rules in ultimate is Spirit of the Game, which places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

Olympia Ultimate Leadership, a.k.a The Board
This document aims to establish the basic structure of the board to provide clarity for members and those who join the board in the future.
Membership: The board has 4-8 members. This size allows the board to schedule meetings with relative ease and aims to avoid burnout of dedicated community members by limiting the number of community leaders serving on the board simultaneously. New board members are invited to serve on the board by existing board members. Any community member interested in serving on the board is enthusiastically encouraged to inquire with a current board member. New members are invited with the expectation that they serve on the board for at least a year, and that they may leave the board, without guilt, when they can no longer sustain the commitment. The board may also vote to remove a member. To remain on the board, members must attend 75% of the meetings in a calendar year. The board makes a good-faith effort to schedule meetings for times when all members can attend.
Meetings: The board has at least 4 meetings a year. The board president is responsible for note-taking and will make notes available to all board members and community members who inquire.
Roles: The board, as of 2024, has six roles. President, Vice President/League Commissioner, Community Development Coordinator, Traveling Team Czar, Pickup and Safety Commissioner, and Treasurer. President and Treasurer are elected by a majority vote of the other members, with the longest consecutively serving member of the board breaking a tie, if necessary.
The president’s role is to ensure that Board meetings are scheduled; facilitate meetings (including setting the agenda and keeping the agenda moving); serve as the primary contact person for inquiries about Olympia Ultimate Players community and the Board. The president serves a term of one year and may be elected to consecutive terms.
The Treasurer’s role is to hold and keep an accounting of funds related to Olympia Ultimate and Board activities.
Traveling Team Czar organizes the Pitchapalooza event (usually in January). Main task is to appoint captains to each tournament. Captains do all registration/bids and recruiting and may select whoever they want for their teams but are encouraged to pull from the pool of players who were active in Pitchapalooza.
Youth Program Coordinators initiate and plan all aspects of the youth program, ages 5-14 to ensure that there are safe and inclusive spaces for youth to play with knowledgeable and trained coaches.
High School Program Coordinator initiates and plans all aspects of the high school program ages 15-18 to ensure that there are safe and competitive places to play.
Pickup and Safety Commissioner ensures that inclusive pickup games are available in the area for all players in the area. This position also supports safety measures, injury prevention, and first aid preparedness for the community whenever possible.
Community Development Coordinator provides opportunities for the ultimate frisbee community to give back to the broader Lacey, Yelm, Tumwater, Olympia community in meaningful ways. Donating annually to the local food bank and volunteering time to support them is a current recurring activity.
All other roles can and should be designed by the board and its members so that 1) nothing falls through the cracks, and 2) everyone on the board is contributing to the well-being of the Olympia Ultimate community and the fulfillment of the mission statement.
Decision-making:
The Board aims to make decisions primarily by consensus. However, any member may call for a vote at any time. A decision made by a vote is approved by the board when 60% or more of a quorum approves it. A quorum is 75% or more of the total Board membership. In the event of a tie, the president’s vote breaks the tie.
Board decisions may be made at in-person meetings or through written discussion. Any member may make a proposal by email. The same voting rules apply to votes in writing and votes in person.
Committees:
The Board has two standing committees. Community members will be recruited and empowered to participate in other needs as they arise. These two committees are recognized extra contributions to the ongoing work and needs that are additional to the skills and capacity of single board members.
Geofest Tournament Committee: Includes Tournament Director (TD) and at least 2 other people helping out. The TD and Committee may recruit other volunteers as necessary. Duties: organize Geofest, recruit teams throughout the year, communicate with other team captains, run the registration process, organize Olympia players and teams, reserve fields, purchase field food, secure insurance, secure fields, ensure safety measures are met, coordinate volunteers.
Graphic Design Committee: Includes designing merchandise and graphics for online and printing. Needs arise for the tournament teams, Geofest home tournament, leagues, websites, and special events. This committee supports the timely requests of the community.
